Bill C-38 passed, with a pretty tight margin of 158 votes for to 133 against. Still, it passed!

*does a Happy Dance*

Of course, in retaliation, Alberta is threatening to do away with the Marriage Act altogether, but I don't know if they'll actually be able to go through with that. I mean, no civil ceremonies at all, in the entire province? Yeesh.

I can hardly wait to see how Stephen Harper will put his foot in it this time. Lord knows, he's made any number of blunders over the past few weeks. :::snigger:::

I loved how he implied that Quebecers were more open minded than the rest of Canada there at one point, which was a Bad Thing!

That was such a beaut.

Tell me about it. :::shakes head::: What an idiot.

And damn. I skip LJ for a few days and suddenly you have a new name! Good thing I recognized your icon. I thought for a minute you'd made one for someone else, but then figured that if it was blue monochrome, it was probably you. Went and checked your LJ, and sure enough: name change!

Harper = muy entertaining. Not that he means to be.

And I figured those who'd known my icon style long enough would catch on. :D

Pretty much. Love the mouse icon. :)

The amusing thing is, I got it a week before I even thought to change the LJ name seriously. Whee!

Foreshadowing.

:::solemn nod:::

So, is this slew of comments just a way to test out the new name, or are you coming out of hiding for a while? :)

Totally admit it. New LJ name! Squee!

But also, work is actually quiet this morning, so I can post without something being late or feeling guilty for not thinking up more stuff to do. Heh!

It can sometimes take me two days to write the longer posts. Start it one day, end it the next. Or lunch hours sometimes. Dude. Yeesh!

You've got that backwards - Alberta's talking about going to only civil unions, not doing away with them.

Are you sure? That seems to make no sense, given that they don't agree with the new law. Maybe I misunderstood what the premier said in that interview yesterday, then.

I'll look it up when I'm not at work, I guess.

They want to not have to perform "marriages" they don't agree with, so they're just going to say that the state doesn't perform "marriages" at all, they perform "civil unions". Then you get your civil union upgraded to a full marriage by a church (or sea captain - yarr!) if you really care that much about being recognized as "married", but that's just semantics - civil unions would have all the legal benefits of a marriage.

Okay, here's what I found.

So, Alberta keeps civil unions, but is refusing to perform actual marriages, leaving those to religious institutions.

Yeah, that's the exact article I read.

Wait, it's not - I was confused because the language was very similar, but of course it was similar: I was looking at quotes.

Alberta... the province of Preston Manning, Stockwell Day, and Ralph Klein. Are you REALLY surprised? *wry*

Personally, I prefer points east of there... like, say, Ontario, or farther east than that, even.

*shakes head*
