It's okay if you don't understand this post. This is Canadian Content at its best. ;)

I was trying to explain to someone the other day that my role in life is to be the straight man. I am not designed to be the center of attention. I make a good foil.

I am the Adam to someone's Bugs Potter. The Boots to their Bruno. The Mike to their Rudy Miller.

In other words, I'm the flute-guy.

And that's okay. The world needs flute-guys. Without flute-guys, the Bugs Potters of the world wouldn't retain their aura of mystery. They'd be caught, arrested, or they just wouldn't shine as brightly.

I just wish that I'd figured that out a long time ago, instead of only recently. I think I'd have been a lot happier with myself. :)

or, in keeping with the Canadian content ... you are Fifth Business.

I was so clever in my last comment that I neglected to mention that I, most of the time, am also Fifth Business. I say we run away and star in our own novel.

Bruno and Boots.

Now there's a set of names I have not heard in a long time. A long long time.

The integrity of Macdonald Hall is being threatened!

SO damned clever are you! I loooove Davies' work. Then again, I'm a general CanLit geek.

You now need an icon that says, "Suit yourself, Miller" for those days where you just can't be bothered to argue any more.

Dude, that rocked. Although my favourite was The Manticore.

We should totally run away and start our own novel. :D

Totally, except I never found any illustrations that did the books justice. ^_^

Incidentally, I adored Robertson Davies as well.

Okay, so:

If I say to this group that the latest Harry Potter feels like The War With Mr Wizzle as written by George Orwell, you people actually know what the hell I'm talking about?

t!

Absolutely. And I want to read that book!

Holy crap - I just went to his web site and he's still writing! I always kind of thought he vanished. I haven't read anything since The Zucchini Warriors - man, that's less than half his books!

Oops, I lied - I've actually read up to Losing Joe's Place.

Yeah, but around there things started to get a bit weak, which is why I stopped reading them. I prefer his older classics.

He signed my well-loved copy of This Can't Be Happening At Macdonald Hall, after I did security/wrangling at one of his signings. I love working in the book business. Although for years I was cowed by his success of publishing a novel written in the seventh grade; and he's, what, a year or two older than I am? I got over it, thankfully. :)

Yeah, I didn't really like The Zucchini Warriors. I stopped reading after that. Maybe he got better again though. *is vaguely hopeful*

Wow. Yes. So yes. Hadn't thought of that, but yes.

"It's the Great-Lakes-St.-Lawrence-Lowlands Fault Line! Run!"

"Sir, what's a Keat?"

Good times.

And I still say Nuclear Teacup is the best band name ever.

Ohmigod. You read Korman. *sigh* Most hilarious books EVER. I've gotten my sister addicted to them. We blabber on about flute-guys, too. 'cause, hey, let's face it - sidekick can be a fun place to be!

Nope. Stick to his earlier books. They're wonderful. The newer ones... they lack the sense of humor that made the first ones so absolutely wonderful. (Yes, I still like them. I read the Bruno and Boots books to my brother over Christmas - I just about died giggling over certain parts!)
