My bank card isn't working. I keep getting an "insufficient funds" error message.

WTF?!?!

I just deposited $700 yesterday! I paid off $265 to Hydro Québec. Basic math: 700 - 265 = 435, right?

So how the blazes do I have "insufficient funds" to withdraw $60? Huh? Huh?

Aaaaargh!

Grr...

Sometimes a check takes a few days to go through.
I feel for you though. Been there often enough.

*nods*

You're probably right. It's just annoying because it's a company cheque and not a personal one, and I've never had problems with them before. This would be the first time my bank does this.

It also begs the question: why did they let me pay my Hydro bill yesterday if the cheque wasn't cleared?

Sometimes, depending on the bank, the bank will give you a partial credit on the cheque you just deposited... Then they'll make you wait for the rest of it. *shrug*

So maybe you used up that partial credit thingy.

[livejournal.com profile] caitlin is probably on to something. With my bank, regardless of who the cheque is from, it takes several days for it to process and make it into my actual account. My balance is often updated right away, but my "available balance" is minus that cheque. The day I initially deposit it, I can get up to $1000 of it back in cash, if I want it, so long as I have an equal amount in my account already to cover it in case the cheque bounces. It's pretty ridiculous. That's why I just went to direct deposit and don't worry about it. My money is there by 8AM every other Friday and that's that.

I feel for you, I really do. I've been through that hell so many times, I can't even get started on the subject or I'll probably never stop ranting again...

Bleah. Well, thanks for the empathy, and I'm *very* sorry you had to go through that shit too.

It's the way Washington Mutual (US bank) does things... even if you only have $5 in the account, if you deposit a cheque in your account, they will credit you $100 to use immediately (provided the cheque is $100 or more, of course), and immediately take that into account. I don't know what happens if you put the wrong amount you're depositing in and it turns out to be less (since I've never done that)...

but, anyway... that's my experience on the matter.
