Random thought inspired by a recent post

Funny how that seems to apply to everyone else, but when I'm myself people seem to take that as an invitation either to take advantage of me or to deliver a swift kick to the kidneys.
At least, that's been my experience in the past.
People seem to like the new, made–up me a lot better. I try not to compare and compete, but I'm never content being myself.

Georgie is making love to my desk lamp. Well, he's rubbing his head on the lampshade and threatening to topple it over every few seconds. I'm not sure what has prompted this latest behaviour, but whatever it is, it can't be good.
I meant to post about yesterday evening last night and completely forgot, so I'm doing that now.

ipanicked's Master's Recital was last night. He's a talented tenor studying at my Alma Mater (hey, that alliterated! Go me!).
I arrived at about 7:30, only to find that the concert had been pushed back by half an hour to 8:30. Our friend Louis the Lich arrived soon after, and regaled me with horror stories about that unpleasant little piece of shit, Patrick Cassidy, whom I will name in my private LiveJournal if I damned well please, thank you very much. That man has to be the most obnoxious piece of pond scum ever to grace God's good earth, and I felt that way long before he threatened my good friendblackbuffet with a lawsuit over something truly insignificant.
We were later joined by more friends, including but not limited tocurtana, forthright, and miseri as well as ipanicked himself and his lovely wife Katherine.
As it turned out, our favourite tenor has once again (with his customary bad luck in such matters) contracted a laryngial infection and had to cut his performance short. He only performed the second part of his program, a selection of songs by Britten, for whom I've never had any particular affection.
We had a few tense moments during which we were all afraidipanicked's voice would give out, but he made it all the way through to the end, and in spite of his illness I far preferred this year's performance to last year's recital. I'm not exactly an expert in the field, but I thought that this year's performance was far more consistent than last year's.
I'm still not a fan of Britten.
On the work front, there has been (say it with me now) YET ANOTHER PROBLEM with the payroll.
This mistake, however, dates back to last year, and won't actually affect me, although it'll affect some of the people who were hired at the same time as me.
Actually, if any of you (*cough*fearsclave*cough*) are at all versed in Canadian law, I'd like to know if what they're doing is legal.
Here's the sitch: we were hired last year with the understanding that we would be paid $13.87 an hour (or something close to that) for the duration of our stay in the department in which we were hired.
During the fourth week of our employment (or the third pay cycle), there was a mistake made on our salaries, and we were paid as though we were one whole grade higher, that is $15.47 per hour.
We, or at least I, immediately pointed out the discrepancy to our superiors, who sent us an email, saying it would be fixed on our next paycheque. It wasn't. So we pointed that out to our superiors, who apologised for the inconvenience and told us they'd fix it on the next paycheque. Needless to say, they didn't.
Eventually we gave up begging them to pay us less, and left it at that.
This year (specifically, last Thursday), someone in accounting woke up and realised that we were getting the wrong salary.
For a while there was talk of demanding retroactive corrections (which would have meant we had to pay them back over $4000 in some cases), which was quickly squelched.
However, they are going to reduce our pay back to where it "should be," regardless of whether some employees got raises on their current salary and what have you.
Now, this doesn't apply to me, as I've switched departments in the meantime, so I'm not affected. However, I think it really sucks, after a year's hard work in this company, that my coworkers have this "correction" made on their salaries.
I'm just wondering if this is actually legal, or whether they're bending a whole lot of rules and hoping that none of us protests for fear of "rocking the boat."
