Epic, weapons-grade fail, as [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave would say.

1- They open only at 09:00 on Sundays. This would be fine on most days, except that I finished work at 06:30 and had to be back for 16:00, which meant that I got home at 10:00 and thus only got about 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Not Good.

2- The rental ended up costing about $30 more than the original estimate. Not the end of the world, but having the cost underestimated by about 35% was a bit of a shock.

3- I paid Interac, because I hate using my credit card. The net result? The $350 they froze on my credit card "for security only" will continue to be frozen for five fucking business days. What for? No one could tell me. I returned the car, after all, so as far as I'm concerned they no longer need my security deposit. Nope. If I had paid with my credit card, the freeze would have magically gone away "automatically." Not so if I pay my bill in any other way.

I also asked for a written confirmation that my funds would be unfrozen, and the guy refused, stating it would be done "automatically." Unfortunately, I was so tired I could barely see straight, and I didn't put up the fuss I normally would have. I should have done.

I hate society.

You've gotta make a complaint to Communauto. Renting cars through them, I have twice (at separate rental places) had the staff call Communauto to confirm that I will not, under any circumstances, be giving them any credit-card information. They've got to respect their deal with Communauto as much as you've got to respect yours -- that's just the way it is.

They generally hold the funds in case you've gotten a parking ticket.

More fool me. The guy told me that the deal with Communauto absolutely required a credit card. I will be calling Communauto tomorrow during business hours to make an official complaint concerning the service: not that Communauto was at fault here (they weren't), but to make sure they know that Discount is being assholish with their clients.

I may also go back to Discount tomorrow and make a fuss, the way I should have this morning.

Am I the only one who's appalled that they hold $350 in case of a parking ticket? The most expensive ticket I've ever received was $42. Besides, "five business days" wouldn't cover a ticket if I ignored it: tickets are mailed out 30 days after being issued originally. They're just screwing around with my money.

Tell me about it. I'm thinking of investing in an entire kitchen set of smite.

Rent-A-Wreck allows you to rent without a credit card, but with a $500 deposit. They then hold the money for A MONTH. But no one stands up to these people. It's pretty disgusting.

Call your Credit Card company. They should be able to clear it right away for you.

Renting A Car

Good gravy, I haven't rented a car in... maybe never, I guess.

I didn't know about all these weird holds for security, "for tickets" (bull!), and so on.

What is Interac?

Interac is direct payment (via banking card). It's a trademark name for Interactive Banking, I would guess.

Rental companies are entirely comprised of bullshit. It's very annoying.

Maybe it's the sleep deprivation talking, but the more I look around the more I see various facets of consumer society pressuring me not only to spend money, but to spend money I don't have (i.e. use my credit card), or to extract money from me in every way possible. There are hidden fees everywhere: shipping, handling, customs, "security" deposits, random surcharges, periodic "adjustments" to bills...

I got a notice in the mail that the government was "adjusting" my revenue for last year, which augmented the amount to which I was entitled by... wait for it... one cent. Yes. One. Whole. Cent. The letter further admonished me that this amount would count towards next year's taxes, and that I was required to file it along with all my other paperwork. One. Frikking. Cent.

Sorry. Went all ranty there.

The sooner I get my own place in the country off the grid, the better.
