Believe it or not. . . When a cat looks at you and then slits its eyes three or so times, that's his version of smiling at you and letting you know that you're swell. If you do it right back with a close-lipped smile, the cat might even repeat the slitty-eyes! (Yes, I've tried it. It works, although perhaps the cat is actually saying "I loathe you and plan to kill you in your sleep tonight" and I'm saying "Not if I kill you first" and then he's saying "Okay. . . we'll see")
Also, if a cat stares at you intently, you should stare back and, whatever you do, do not look away or down first! You must stare the cat down, thus proving your dominance. If you look away or down first, it's your way of acknowledging that your cat is the boss of you.
