I went out shopping today, mostly in order to get Hallowe'en candy for tonight. I was dismayed, not to say shocked, by the complete and utter lack of candy out there. There wasn't a single fruit-flavoured candy for miles, no lollipops to speak of, and certainly none of those lovely white candies with red stripes that taste of mint. Instead, there were massively overpriced bags of small chocolate bars. Five dollars for twelve, or something ridiculous like that. Hershey's and Nestle and all those companies that already make oodles of money anywhere.

I did find Rockets, and a small bag of caramels, after searching a great deal. I then went to a different store, and finally found lollipops in small quantities, hidden behind a whole display of overpriced chocolate bars. Now, don't get me wrong: I like chocolate bars as much as the next girl. However, when it comes to Hallowe'en I am a traditionalist: I look for lollipops and fruit-flavoured candy that you can suck on for a good ten minutes before it dissolves, and for those little chocolate candies wrapped up to look like pumpkins (which I never found).

What on earth has happened to Hallowe'en?

Also, I was really appalled to see that the Christmas decorations and other stuff have already been put on display at the local Loblaws. I'm sorry, but could we at least wait until Hallowe'en is over before descending into the Massive Christmas Overload? Could we? Huh? Please?

Apparently not. I fear I am becoming old and disgruntled, because every year things seem to get worse.

I am off to make chilli, as soon as my beef thaws.

I dunno, there's tons of fruity candies here, and tootsie rolls, lollipops, rockets, etc... I have had to really restrain myself!

Marketing and Money.

Or rather (as I imagine it) moneymoneymoneymoneymoney.

Its sick that the christmas stuff is already up too. I feel old when I say to myself "I remember when you didn't see xmas decorations til the end of november"

The evils of marketing...

Enjoy the chili :)

Did you see the huge bag of Hallowe'en candies that Peter brought to our place for game a couple of weeks ago? And I was at Wal-Mart last week, and their Hallowe'en section (including candy as well as chocolate bars) was huge. Maybe you just weren't at the right store, or were looking too late. I stopped in at Pharma-Prix this afternoon for a few other essentials, and their Hallowe'en stuff was looking fairly picked over - although there were still lots of those little orange-and-black wrapped gross things ;)

I think it has a lot to do with the stores in my general vicinity. One of the disadvantages of living in a working-class neighbourhood.

No accounting for taste. I pondered picking some up for him at the store, and eventually decided that they were just too gross to contemplate.

I love the hell out of those things; they're the only things I *haven't* been able to find! :(

I can't find any hallowe'en kisses for some reason... not even at Honest Ed's! :( If you get me some I would be eternally grateful!!

He is trying to lose weight, after all.

But then again, it's November in seven and a half hours. Sugar is always good in November.

Mmmm, Rockets...

We have ginormous bags of Tootsie Rolls and affiliated candyage, because HRH loves Tootsie Rolls. I don't think we'll have more than a handful of kids, because no one around here has decoration or pumpkins out other than our next-door neighbours.

Sounds like Canada has caught up with the US in terms of stupid marketing.

Yup, I got "Tootsie Rolls and affiliated candyage" as well, 'cause though I like Tootsie Rolls, I won't gorge on them the way I would on leftover chocolate...

I'm going back to the post office tomorrow or the day after, so if they still have them out, I'll pick you up a bunch :)

Yeah, I looked everywhere for them here with no luck :(

Walmart had a great cnady d=selection, apart from the kisses. I'm planning to go back tomorrow when it is all stupidly reduced and stick up for the next few months :)

Indeed. I think I had all of three of the tiny bite-size ones today, which, over seven hours of work, is not bad at all.

Also, I was really appalled to see that the Christmas decorations and other stuff have already been put on display at the local Loblaws.

Hey, supposedly it was Halloween decorations still being up while Christmas decorations were being erected that inspired Tim Burton to write the original poem of The Nightmare Before Christmas. And he wrote that in 1983. So one good thing came out of that! (And plenty of annoying things, too. We've practically caught up to that Peanuts special where the Christmas decorations are up on Valentine's Day ("Only 320 days until Christmas!").)
