Today my nation is 139 years old, though its history started long before it officially became a country.

Happy Canada Day to all my fellow countrymen, and to all the rest of you out there who think Canada is a pretty neat place even if you don't live here.

I don't often engage in unadulterated patriotism (it's almost uncanadian ^_-), but I would like to state for the record that I am very proud to live here and that I would be hard-put to find another country where I'd want to live more.

O, Canada!
Terre de nos aieux,
Ton front est ceint
De fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée
Il sait porter la foi;
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits!
Et ta valeur de foi trempée
Protègera nos foyers et nos droits!
Protègera nos foyers et nos droits!

The True North, strong and free.

Happy Canada Day!

I'm a fan of the second verse in English:

Oh Canada!
Where pines and maples grow.
Great prairies spread,
And lordly rivers flow.
How dear to us
Thy broad Domain,
From East to Western Sea.
Thy land of hope
For all who toil,
Thy True North stron and free!
God keep our land
Glorious and free,
Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee!
Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee!

Happy Canada Day -- but what's the history that makes Canada only 139 years old?

Our official confederation (er, pardon, Confederation) only happened in 1867, when the process of amalgamating the separate British colonies remaining in continental North America began with the British North America Act. Everything before that doesn't officially count. Or something...

Yeah, which results in bizarre things like my university being about 20 years older than my country and one of our big department stores (The Hudson's Bay Company) being roughly twice as old as Canada, not to mention once having owned about half of it...

It's my favourite verse, too.
