More musings on 24, and new icon!

mousmeOkay, so. The other two hours of the season premiere were last night. Once again, I watched it with my mother, and we now have a standing date on Monday nights to watch it together (as long as it does, in fact, air on Monday nights. Otherwise we're screwed.)

I'm not sure what was more entertaining: the show or my mother's comments.
My mother: (as Jack Bauer looks grim during a hostage-taking situation) "Doesn't that man ever change his expression? He hasn't looked any different since the show began!"
Me: "Mim, it's been less than four hours and he's been framed for murder, shot at, had his girlfriend's son threatened, and been taken prisoner. Don't you think *you'd* look like that in his shoes?"
My mother: "Well, he could at least try to experiment with different ways of looking grim."
She, too, is not impressed with the Blisteringly Stupid Teenager. In fact, for the first time in living memory, my mother picked up on my habit of talking to the characters on the screen as though they can hear me, and mocked the boy mercilessly during his OMG-I'm-responsible-for-ruining-everything-Angst! moment. "Yes, darling, it is all your fault...
I was very amused.
Anyway, onward with the commentifying.
1- Have you noticed that whenever members of the same family talk on the phone in this show they always end their conversations with "I love you?" My mother pointed this out to me, and expressed profound annoyance at the habit. Now, in a sense I can understand why they would do this: put in a life-and-death situation, some people would want to express their love for their families in case they never see them again. On the other hand, my mother thinks this cheapens the sentiment rather than driving home the point the show is trying to drive home. It was an interesting observation, anyway. I'm not sure what to make of it.
2- I miss Sherri Palmer. Conspiracies just aren't the same without her.
3- The new First Lady is no Sherri Palmer, but damn is she a force to be reckoned with. Interesting strategy, although I'm not sure if, had she gone through with her plan, that security would have believed the woman, since she's known to be delusional about a lot of stuff. In other news, I was very very squicked when she put that pass card in her mouth. Dude, she interrupted the guy while he was peeing, and he never washed his hands before giving her the card. Eww.
3- Sean Astin! Eee! Playing the inevitable Morally Ambiguous Guy Sent From Operations To Thwart CTU. My mother thinks he's a bad guy, although I didn't quite understand her reasoning. I think she got a bunch of the characters confused again. Also, I'd want to be called "Mr. McGill" too if my first name were "Lynn."
4- No! Don't bring her back to CTU! Plot death! Plot death! Ahem. Okay, so that was from Sunday's show, but still, I had to get it in there. CTU only gets really interesting when Jack is there and starts shooting people.
5- My mother asked me: "Are the S. W. A. T. team ever going to be ready? They spend their time not being ready!" I'm inclined to agree. We didn't need to be told that they weren't ready every two minutes. We knew that already.
6- Why the hell did that guy (I forget his name) attack Mrs. Logan himself? Sheesh. What a way to get caught, buddy.
7- Is it me, or is Charles Logan very much like Nixon in looks and mannerisms? Do we suppose that was done on purpose for some reason?
8- I tried to imagine 24 without the internet or telephones, and couldn't do it. As a random observation.
