Don't get me wrong: he's a great guy. Salt of the earth and all that.

But someone needs to kick his ass seriously for neglecting his cat. Now that Smudge has begun to appear for more than two minutes at a time and has actually let me pet him once or twice, I have concluded that he's in remarkably sorry shape.

First off, his fur is a mess. He's a long-haired black cat, and his coat is a mass of tangles and clots and dandruff, due to the fact that I'm quite sure Mike never even *thought* of brushing him, let alone actually brushed him. So, when Smudge has got used to being here, it'll be off to the vet for him to be sedated and then given a lion cut, because there's no other way his coat will ever recover the way it is now. :P

Second problem: the cat is all but starving. I can feel every single one of his bones through his skin, and when I lifted him the other day, I could barely feel him. If that cat weighs more than three or four pounds, I'd be surprised. This cat should, optimally, probably weigh about nine pounds or a little more. He's small, but not *that* small.

This, combined with the fact that the appearance of his fur is so nasty (it has no shine at all and is full of dandruff), means the cat is severely malnourished.

Now, there's nothing here that can't be fixed, obviously. Still, people really shouldn't have pets unless they're willing to put in the time, energy, and yes, money, to keep them in optimal physical health.

In other news, Gretzky's visit to the vet went very well, all things considered. The mass in her ear (the vet thinks it's still probably a polyp) has been reduced by half, but appears to be ulcerated (I think that's a word). So it's more eardrops and then another follow-up. Poor little girl. She's being very good about this, apart from having an accident in the carrier (I think the car makes her queasy), and she doesn't complain that much when she's at the vet.

*sigh*

I want all my kitties to be happy and healthy. Is that too much to ask?
