Poor Gretzky...
Apr. 24th, 2009 08:45 pmWe had Cat Drama today.
The Parental Units arrived for dinner, and my father went to look at the garden. A moment later he said: "Isn't that the ground hog?"
I glanced out in the garden and saw a splash of orange fur. "No," I answered, "That's Gretzky."
"It's breathing awfully hard," my father opined.
I went to the door. "Gretzky! Come here, sweetie!"
The cat didn't come, which is unusual. She usually comes right away when I call. I called a couple more times, then noticed that she was sitting awfully close to the fence. I wasn't wearing my glasses or contacts, and so couldn't quite see what was happening. When I walked over, though, I saw immediately that she had gotten her collar stuck in the fence trying to wriggle under it, and was choking quite thoroughly, and not only that but was bleeding from a place I couldn't see.
A few minutes of careful struggling got her free. For a few moments I was afraid I'd have to cut her collar away, because she was so thoroughly entangled, but eventually I managed to undo the buckle. I still don't know where all the blood came from: either she tore one of her claws while scrabbling to get away (there are rocks under that section of fence), or else she bit the inside of her mouth.
I brought her in, cleaned her up, and she's been sleeping ever since. She had a bite to eat, and lay on the floor for a while, and now she has moved up to the sofa. She seems okay, overall. Her breathing sounds fine, she's not bleeding anymore, and she's had both food and water, seemingly without any trouble.
I'm going to keep an eye on her for the next couple of days, just to make sure nothing goes horribly wrong, but overall I think we got lucky. Poor kitty. Not a good way to end the day. I've taken off her collar for the nonce, and she'll be staying inside for the next few days, at the very least.
Needless to say, dinner was overcooked.

Date: 2009-04-25 02:25 am (UTC)I'm so glad your father saw Gretzky struggling. I fear things would've gone from bad to worse if he hadn't.
So glad the damage seems minimal. :)

Date: 2009-04-25 03:44 am (UTC)So my Pet has allowed me the use of the thing she's runs her fingers over, instead of scritching me, to say hi to you, Gretsky. I am really sorry that your day of fun and adventure in the Big Room With Good Smells was cut so short. I hope that you were able to do a lot of running and jumping (things I like to do when I'm allowed to go into that really Big Room) before your necklace got caught. That happened to me once, but I was in a really big patch of that neat green stuff that makes me giddy, and when I lay down and rolled around in it, my necklace came off. My Pet found me, and my necklace, and took me back to the Big, Boring Box, but I was so giddy, I didn't want to eat food. At least, until I really wanted my candy.
Oh my pet is here and she seems to want to say something. I'll say good bye for now. Take care, Gretsky!!
Right. Sorry 'bout that, Phnee. Sasha may not be the brightest light bulb in the box, but she's really cute. I just wish she wouldn't escape so often. Glad that Gretsky's doing well. Hug and scritch her lots and lots. From all of us, human and non, over here in this part of LJ.

Date: 2009-04-25 10:34 pm (UTC)You can buy cat collars that separate into two pieces when the collar gets caught on something. Such collars are designed to prevent cats from choking or hanging themselves by their collars while out exploring the Universe.
If the collar separates, you cat won't be wearing a collar anymore, but her life will be saved. So it's good to have your cat microchipped, too, in case she becomes lost without a collar.
Hugs
from Lioness
