What the heck is Dreamwidth, and why is everyone getting all squirmy and excited about it?

Hrm, interesting... I hadn't heard about it but I've been away from LJ for weeks. Would be nice to see it take off, but I agree with curtana above that it's funny how you need money to keep a service going.
