I am considering investing in a chest freezer. Was going to do it when I moved, then thought that perhaps I didn't quite have the money to spend on it just then. Am reconsidering my decision, but I have a Large Expense that I have to work on before I can really truly consider it.

I have been assailed by a serious case of "Meh" this afternoon. My stomach still hurts, I have preparatory shopping to do for Québec City, and a houseful of chores waiting for me when I get home. Did I mention "Meh?"

Meh.

Fifty minutes until I can leave...

I loved having a freezer. Don't forget to check local used appliance places...I got a perfectly good small chest freezer for $35.

True. I may prowl on Craigslist for a while, too.

Chest freezers are a great addition to a household. If you plan on cooking up many meals in advance it could do you wonders by you being able to cook and freeze more at a time!

I've got one and LOVE it!

We got one too and love it *but* if I had a do-over I'd spend a little extra and get the standing type that's more ike a fridge. I find it really hard to use the space well and it's a pain when I have to dig all the way down to the bottom.

I've used ours to preserve food-- I freeze berries and pineapple when they're super-cheap. I've made big batches of pesto and frozen them in ziplocks (pressed flat in sheets so I can just break pieces off). I also buy apples now when there are special varieties in the markets. Peel and slice them the way you would for pies, throw on some lemon juice then bag them up and toss into the freezer. You can do the same with peaches and nectarines (I don't use lemon on them though). Applesauce freezes well and so does tomato sauce from fresh tomatoes. It's a good way to use local produce all year long.

Random note: when friends of mine freeze pesto, they do so in ice cube trays, so they've got easily-accessible convenient sizes. I dunno if that'd work out to be more vs. less work overall than the flat-sheet method (which I hadn't heard of before), but something to think about anyway.

Yeah, I thought about doing it that way but mine is actually faster. Instead of spooning it into the trays you pour it into the bag, seal, and lay it flat.

You also don't have to worry about covering the ice cube trays.

Oh, cool, I'll have to keep that in mind. Not that I either make or freeze much pesto.

And yeah, my parents have a little bar-fridge-sized freezer, and they find it super useful, but would probably get annoyed if they had to dive down into a chest-style one. Not that they probably make chest-style ones as small as my parents'.

I am considering investing in a chest freezer.

Are you sure? Most people in your neck of the woods want chest warmers. You know, for running and stuff.

ba-dump-dum.

Okay, seriously, we got ours second-hand for $60US and have been very happy with it. My dearest [livejournal.com profile] savant_da_rat cooks up a whole storm of meals on Sundays, freezes portions to take to work for lunch all week. With the freezer, he can do two or more weeks at once.

I got rid of my small chest freezer last year after the ex left. With my ex, I found she would fill up the thing and forget about everything she left in there. I found soups she had made, roasts she had bought, left at the bottom for ages.

When I was alone, it was only moderately useful (at the time) but a REAL pain in the butt on the electrical wiring because of the screwed up set up in my apartment...it caused havoc with the computers and AC.

I REALLY miss it now. J keeps our little fridge freezer very very full and now is when we'd really get the most out of it (if it didn't cause so many issues).
