I have people to help me move! This is all to the good.

I have had a stressful day. I ran out of boxes early on in the packing process: not entirely surprising since I had only a "starter kit" from U-Haul, which has only twenty boxes in it, only ten of which are of a size to accommodate books, which is what I started with.

So I rented a car from CommunAuto. First off, there was no car available until 12:30. Fine. I waited, and went to get the car, only to find that the previous renter was running late. He arrived at 12:50, which gave me a little over an hour to go to U-Haul, buy the boxes I needed, come back, unload the boxes, carry them up the stairs, and then bring the car back.

The girl at U-Haul was lovely and helpful, unlike the two strapping young men who sat and watched as I struggled to fit the heavy and unwieldy boxes into the trunk of my car. Incidentally, they didn't fit, and while I was wrangling boxes the trunk tried to close and dealt me a sharp and painful blow to the head.

I came home to find that my delivery from Amazon.ca had arrived in the hour during which I was gone. I was very pleased with this, until I found that the envelope had been slit open and my book was missing. GRAH! Luckily for me [livejournal.com profile] ai731 was home and allowed me to rant at her for a few minutes, after which I felt considerably better.

The book debacle turned out better than I thought: I was convinced someone had stolen my book, but it turns out that the envelope got damaged in transit (or something), and they actually still had my book at the post office. I had to sign a bunch of forms declaring that it was indeed my merchandise, and then I was home free! So I am pleased.

In the meantime I am crabby and sleep-deprived. I think I will take a nap for a few hours, and do some more packing this evening.

ACK! I ordered an iPod from Amazon awhile back, and when I got the box, all that was in it was packing material and a slip detailing what the contents of the order were supposed to be. Glad to hear they found your book!

I too have had an empty sliced-open box arrive from Amazon in the past. I just assumed that postal workers deliberately target them knowing full well that Amazon boxes are always full of salary-enhancing resellable goodies, but now that [livejournal.com profile] mousme's book turned up safe and sound at the post office itself, I wonder what the real truth is here. In the end I got my one resolved directly by Amazon, they just sent more copies of the DVDs which did arrive intact.

Yeah, it makes me wonder, too. I ended up using Amazon's awesome "don't call us, we'll call you" feature to talk to an actual human, and the very helpful guy on the other end of the phone got me a refund no problem. I then did what I should have done in the first place: I went to the Apple store, spent a little more than I planned, and got my iPod RIGHT NOW (I wanted it before I left for my trip to mom's), and I have the safety of being able to go back to said store if my iPod has any problems.

Boxes: Go to Concordia bookstore. If you can call first. They will usually give you many free, clean, uniform, collapsed boxes, and may even offer to tape them together for you. As long as they are not doing returns (they're not right now, your timing is perfect), they are very accommodating.

That reminds me. The SAQ has good boxes for books.

Apparently the SAQ no longer gives out boxes for moving. They've got some kind of box recycling/reusing program set up now, and it's apparently bureaucratic enough that it's a pain for managers to give the boxes away any more.

Or so someone was telling me recently, at least. Maybe it was just their SAQ.
