So after I posted yesterday I got a message from [livejournal.com profile] ai731 letting me know that there are appraisers coming in today at 9:30 to see the place.

:::cue panicked flailing:::

There wasn't all that much panicking, as it happens. I've been cleaning steadily, in short bursts every day, for a month, minus the week in Paris. I had even done a blitz on the bedroom the day before, which had rendered it a good deal tidier than before (although by no means tidy).

So after I took George to the vet, I spent the evening cleaning. George was a sweetie, the way he always is when I take him to the vet: he voluntarily climbed in and out of his carrier and settled nicely inside without a single protest. He's also been taking his pills like a gentleman, with an air of resigned martyrdom, rather than the struggle to the death I have with Gretzky. He only got to be a bit of a handful while we were there, because he really wanted to go exploring and did not care to have the vet examine him, because that was boring. He then purred very loudly, so loudly that she couldn't actually hear his lung function properly. Anyway, he seems mostly okay. We're going to be watching him over the next few months to make sure whatever it was doesn't come back.

After that it was all about the cleaning up. I swept and scrubbed and tidied, and most of all I de-cluttered. I had two boxes of Stuff in my room that dated since the last time I moved: I pretty much never unpacked them, and even added to the Stuff over the years. [livejournal.com profile] ai731 specifically stated that there would have to be easy access to windows, faucets, and the electrical panel. As it turns out, those two boxes were right in front of the electrical panel, and so I used that as an excuse to go through them and sort out all the stuff inside. I reduced them to one half of a box, which should be much easier to shove out of the way.

I also assembled a bunch of things for Freecycle, although the Pile o' Freecycle Stuff is not as yet complete. I still have a couple of closets to go through, and after that I will post it all. I may post the list here first, to see if any of my friends want it, but I doubt it: most of it is small stuff, or things like extra litter boxes, which none of us really need.

Then there was vacuuming, and more tidying, and a bit of scrubbing, and laundry. Amazingly enough (for me), I appear to have finished all my laundry, except for about half a load's worth. Don't ask me how that happened, because I don't know. I'm not complaining, mind you.

I'm mostly very pleased with how the bedroom turned out. I laundered all my sheets, pillowcases, eiderdown cover, etc., cleared out all the extraneous stuff (well, 90% of it), vacuumed the floor, and generally made it look nice. So now when the appraisers go in to look at the electrical panel (conveniently located in the bedroom), they won't be horrified at the state it's in. The problem with the bedroom is that it tends to become the default room to stash things, and thus also tends to be the messiest room in the place. I decided to try to adhere to the FlyLady principle of having my bedroom be my safe haven, and from now on I'm going to, at the very least, find another place to stash things at the last minute. If I'm really good, then I won't even need to stash things: routine de-cluttering should (in theory) keep that to a minimum. We'll see how long it lasts. :)

So now that I got a bit of a kick in the pants with regards to the cleaning process, I may in fact get the place properly cleaned out much sooner than I thought. This is a good thing. It will enable me to pack more efficiently, and without too much stress. Tonight, though, I am going to go to bed early. Yes.

I have things about work to post about, but that will wait for another post.

That's been my intention for the past few years, but I just can't seem to get the motivation to do anything about the apartment until I can't find my kitchen table under the clutter. If you have any general motivation tips, really, I'm all ears!

Heh. If I come up with any, I'll let you know. So far, the rule for me has been: "Motivation follows action." Once I'm up and doing something, it's easy to keep going. It's the get-up-and-go that I'm lacking. :P

The appraiser has come & gone. Unfortunately, George took advantage of the bedroom door being open for two minutes to dash in and hide under the bed, so rather than trap him in the bedroom without access to the litterbox, I left your bedroom door open. If this is going to cause chaos, let me know and I'll go up and make a concerted effort to chase the kitties out (which I couldn't really do while I was walking around with the appraiser...)

arrrrgh! Sorry - that was of course meant to go directly to Phnee and not be a reply to your comment, Roz.

LJ does weird things like that sometimes. There have been times when I was *sure* I had commented to the entry, but instead it replied to someone else's comment. Some sort of glitch, I guess.

Hee!

No worries. George teleports, and so I hold no one responsible for his antics. The cats can hang out in there for today as a special treat. Now that I got the place tidied there's less in there that they can permanently damage, so we should be okay.

Everything went well otherwise?

Tempting fate, aren't you?

Saying that in a comment, especially one wherein you are using your George the Destructor icon is certainly tempting fate....

I have the same problem and the kitchen table has been MIA for the last couple of weeks LOL.

To be fair, that's only because we still haven't sorted out J's stuff yet.

Hee!

I know the feeling. Sometimes I stand there and scratch my head and tell myself "I could have sworn there was a chair there last week!"

Yay for George.

And yay for you. You continue to be my housecleaning (and life-improving) role model.

Wow.

That is quite possibly the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me.
