I am officially an old fogey. "Fogey" is my middle name, as I was telling [livejournal.com profile] joane earlier. Being French Canadian, I reserve the right to a second middle name, too, which shall be "Old." Except that I'm going to reverse the order so that the phrase sounds right.

The point is that Phnee is a very, very tired person right now. Tired cat is tired, as the LOLcats would say (although with more spelling mistakes, I'm sure).

I have been very productive this week. I took an appointment to see an optometrist, since my prescription is now nearly eight years old (oops). New glasses are going to be expensive, and I'm thinking of getting contacts as well, since my glasses got really scuffed over the years, and since I'd kind of like to have the choice.

I also got all my stuff squared away to become a member of Communauto (and will be going next week to sign papers and stuff), and read five books in three days. Don't ask me how I managed that last one, because I'm not sure. I also managed to get a full night's sleep every night, which means that I somehow got all that reading done on the metro to and from work, and also last night at Indigo, where I was by myself for nearly two hours.

I now have only one day left in my personal post-once-a-day-in-February challenge. I think the experiment was interesting, although there were days when I had SFA to say and it shows. Oh, did I mention the Overtime Fairy visited again today? I'm working evening shift tomorrow, but my boss (as previously explained, boss =/= supervisor) asked me to come in at 0930 (wah!) to help him with more paperwork.

I love the new computer system. I love it with much love. I'm not locking this post because it's not really a secret or anything. The new dispatching system is gorgeous, reasonably user-friendly, and ZOMG THE SHINY KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS! Also, it has this really cool feature where I can click on my patrol unit and/or event number, and the location pops up directly on my shiny interactive map!

The downside is the constant, and I do mean constant beeping. The system loves beeping at you. It beeps when patrol timers go off, when you get incoming messages, when events go active, when they get dispatched, when patrol units change status... you name it. Sometimes it's continuous beeping until you acknowledge it. This is fine, until you realize that everyone else in the central has a beeping computer too, and not everyone is going to be lightning-quick about acknowledging their alarms. I'm going to need a lot of Valium, or something.

The other small downside is that we're going to have a minimum of six computer monitors per workstation, which can go all the way up to ten, and the computer mice are not all combined into one. So anywhere from three to six mice (mouses?), which will have to be appropriately labeled. I already have problems with grabbing the wrong mouse when I'm at the workstation that handles all the consulate alarms. Yeesh.

Anyway, the long and short of it is that I'm very excited. Our go live date is March 4th, which is next week. Presumably there will be updates then, when I get to use the system live for the first time.

My dear [livejournal.com profile] savant_da_rat was so horrified by my verbal excerpt of your woes that he immediately told me to give you this.

Or you could hire a pied piper, I suppose.

Your posts gave me something to look forward and a reason not to eat everything in my house, including my desk. So thanks!

Someday when I'm in a genealogical mood we could have a brief discussion of dit names?

Don't go too long between posts. I'll miss seeing what you're about. Think about coming down this way sometime this year too, will you?

Ooh, shiny, thank you!

What's a dit name? Sorry, it's early and I've had no coffee. :)

Yep. I'm looking at either a week in May or a week in July. Shall give you dates when I have 'em. I'll need a recommendation for a good (and hopefully not too expensive) place to stay. :)

Dang. I was going to ask you.

I think it might be the extra name (surname?) French-Canadians have (had?)

All I know is that dit names cause much wailing of despair, gnashing of teeth, and rending of garments in genealogy forums.

Captain of the carpet ship? That icon is adorable!

Not a term with which I'm familiar. Must be specialized language.

The icon is from one of my favourite webcomics, and turned into a .gif by [livejournal.com profile] joane. :)
