A very quick note mostly for myself...

To mark the passing of Karol Wojtyla, better-known to the world as Pope John Paul II.
He's the only Pope I have ever known. To me, he is the face that I have always placed on my Church. He embodied Catholicism for me, and the face he put on it at once reassured and appalled me, depending on the subject.
His work was great. There is no question of it: he left behind him a confusing legacy of acceptance and intolerance, of enlightenment and ignorance, of love and indifference.
He is part of the reason I still believe in God, and he is part of the reason I don't attend Church.
Whatever his failings in life, he was a good man, with strength of character and conviction. I pray that God gives him the rest he deserves, after so many years of faithful service. I also pray that, wherever he is now, he understands that he mistook some arcane laws for the will of God, and that he's sorry for the harm he's caused by being blind to God's core message. I hope also that he's able to rejoice in all the good he was able to accomplish in his time on Earth.
Requiem aeternam, dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis.
