mousmeI'll get to the rest of my day in another post, since it mostly went well. A word of warning: if you have little to no patience with bogots, you may want to skip this post.
So I was having dinner with my parents (can we see where this all started to go downhill?) when my father brought up what was really a harmless anecdote about a colleague of his who got a fine for walking through a park to get home after midnight. It appears that there's a new law out there that prohibits people from being in a public park after dark these days (11pm or midnight or thereabouts).
My mother rolled her eyes at my father and coolly informed him that of course this law was in effect and had been for years (not the case, in case you were wondering). The reason, she stated, as though pointing out the obvious to a particularly slow-witted child, was because of all the homosexual activities (emphasis hers, complete with disgusted tone) that go on in Mount Royal after dark.
After I laughed at her (because what else can you do when faced with a statement like that?), she stared at me coldly and told me to research the data before I laughed. I was trying to point out to her that there were doubtless many other people up to hanky-panky in the wee hours of the morning in parks, but she would have none of it. Of course it was the homosexuals, and not just any homosexuals, but male homosexuals.
My mother is not Queen Victoria, I hasten to assure you. She holds female homosexuals in just as much contempt. She just thinks they're all feminists who have no sense of hygiene and just haven't found the right man yet.
It's all I can do not to cry.
I don't think I'll be telling her I'm gay any time soon. *sigh*
