I feel like roadkill. I didn't even drink yesterday: how is this fair?

My coworker, let's call her Lanky!Woman, has gone to Tim Horton's for a coffee run, which is the best news I've had all day.

I'm going to have to do an online CPIC course today. I'd rather have a nap.

In other news, I've been reading Michael Slade, and I think that in spite of his reputation for good research, he is officially Making Shit Up in order to make his novel more compelling. Nothing wrong with that, mind, but there is no section in the RCMP called Special X, and never has been according to my colleagues. Heh. Goes to show: when I read these books a few years back, I just assumed it was true.

Okay, back to work.

Reason and logic dictate that I should go home and go to bed.

That being said, it's been so damned long since I went out on my own and did something fun and frivolous, that I am strongly considering taking myself to the new Star Trek movie I've heard so much about.

So, yeah. I think I'll do that.

Squee! Star Trek!

Okay, let's get the obvious out of the way: it's fluff.

That being said, it's marvelous, shiny, space-age, exciting fluff! So much love for the new movie. I was really, really dubious about the so-called "reboot," but damn if it didn't totally exceed my expectations. The official in-character explanation for the reboot was a bit much, but I guess the film execs decided the target audience of science nerds and trekkies would be too stupid to understand it unless it was explained several times in very simple words.

The characters are true to form, but the new actors manage to do justice to the originals while not simply imitating them. I'm still not 100% sold on Spock, but he was good enough that by the end of the movie I wasn't expecting him to slice open people's heads anymore.

Oh so many happy shiny character moments! I love the doctor. Heck, I even love Kirk. Chekov and Scotty are adorable, and very much in character.

The climax was, umm, less climactic than I thought it would be. Still good, though.

Anyone who says this movie was made without any thought to the fans is either lying or delusional. There was so much fan service I was bouncing in my seat, right up until after the end credits.

Also, the movie made me laugh very very hard.

Teeny-tiny spoiler about the look of the Romulans. )

Well worth seeing on the big screen, although if you're prone to migraines, vertigo or seizures, beware the big fight scenes in space. Egads. I came close to falling over a few times.
