Inauguration Day

I am marking this here only for my future self, who will likely read back and see if I made note of this day. Right now it feels obvious because this is so ubiquitous and feels momentous, but experience has taught me that if enough time goes by, I won't necessarily remember details of what I was feeling or doing during any particular historical event.
I'm honestly still a little surprised that Trump won the election. I was expecting a bitter fight, but I was expecting him to lose and then try to cheat his way into power, even if the loss was only by a razor-thin margin. It's wild to me that enough Americans decided that either his first term in office wasn't so bad that they shouldn't give him another term, or that Biden's term in office was so terrible that they wouldn't even give Kamala Harris a chance to do better.
I'm not a huge fan of Harris, especially given her positions on Palestine and "border security," among other things, but she was certainly better than the alternative.
Today is Trump's inauguration. It's taking place during a cold snap, so it's been moved indoors, meaning fewer people with tickets will attend. I wonder if this will affect the "crowd size" that was so important to him the last time around. I am interested in a morbid way in what his State of the Union Address will be. I don't think that's what it's called during an inauguration year, but something like an "address to Congress." I wonder if he will manage to stay coherent and on message, and if he does manage it, I'm curious to see whether he'll go back to his tried-and-true method of self-aggrandizement while attacking his opponents, or if he will try something different based on whatever his corporate puppet masters would like him to say.
A lot of my US friends are engaging in a social media blackout today, refusing to watch the proceedings or discuss it online. I'm not doing exactly that, but out of respect for them I am not talking about it on social media until tomorrow. I probably won't post on Facebook at all today, and on BlueSky I am sticking to posting pet pictures and the occasional meme, or else stuff that's not overtly political in nature.
I will probably come back later today to do a proper, non-political update, but I felt it was important to mark this. I might be wrong.
