I heard he left, too, so I am giving it another shot. I am especially interested to see what the sixth episode looks like, since apparently he left before that episode was written or filmed.
I am intrigued by the premise and do like the characters, although so far they have suffered from the same "Joss Whedon Writes Strong Women" problems that can be found in all of his work. I'm hoping new writers will allow these promising characters to truly blossom into something more three-dimensional.
