Whoops, where does the time go?

I am too easily distracted, it seems. I keep remembering to post LiveJournal when I'm away from the computer, and then forgetting when I'm finally at the computer.

Things are chugging along at Casa Phnee.

Work has been busy. I had to come in for more overtime this week, which would have been fine had I known in advance that they were planning [Important Redacted Event]. I managed well enough, but having it sprung on me at the last minute was unfortunate. Also, the newbie that I wasn't supposed to train was once again given to me to train for two days this week, while I was still wrangling my current newbie. After this newbie #2 is going to another shift, so I won't have to wear three or four hats at once anymore, thank goodness.

Also, as it turns out, one of the other supervisors (I need to start coming up with code names for them for LJ purposes) threw herself on a scheduling grenade for my sake, and that has allowed me to take actual vacation time starting on Wednesday. I can't even tell you what a relief that is, especially after my first request for vacation in July was denied. I'm hoping to use the nearly two weeks of downtime to good effect, as I'm quite literally exhausted. I've been dragging myself around, scraping from RTO to RTO (RTO is "Regular Time Off," which is what a weekend would be for people who work normal jobs), and barely holding it together because most of my RTOs have been interrupted due to overtime, meaning I haven't had the opportunity to properly rest in a very long time.

Thursday was my monthly Cooking Day with the awesome [livejournal.com profile] ai731, who apparently still reads my LJ. Hi! *waves* I love our cooking days. We've been doing them for about a year and a half now, getting together once a month and spending the entire time making super yummy and healthy (mostly) meals to be put in the freezer, thus guaranteeing we have meals for almost the entire month. During that time we catch up on what's been going on in each other's lives, and talk about all the fun stuff we're into: crafts and volunteering and gardening and self-sufficiency and writing and fandom. Good times all around.

So this time around she showed me the vast improvements she and her husband t! (no longer on LJ, if memory serves) had done to their lovely house out in the country. She decided to follow the method outlined in The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, and her enthusiasm for it and the very visible results in her house have inspired me to give it a shot. I was leery at first, because some of the advice sounds daunting (the author, for instance, seems to think that books are an easy thing to get rid of, which, if you're me, is not true in the slightest), but I asked a bunch of questions, and it does sound like this might be a useful exercise for me to try. No idea if it will work, as I am a horrible procrastinator and I cling to my stuff, but I am going to snag the book from my local library or maybe try to find it second-hand, and give it a go. If nothing else, it may inspire me to clear out my junk drawer. ;)

The plan this week is, once I'm done with work, to take two days to do not much and just get some much-needed sleep. I will take Sergent for some extra-long walks, and spend more time than usual in the community garden. On Saturday I have a date in Montreal with my friends [livejournal.com profile] toughlovemuse and [livejournal.com profile] owldaughter to finally see Captain America: Civil War (where I will probably cry over Steve and Bucky a lot), Starting next Monday and going until the Friday, the plan is to use my free time to declutter the house. Only time will tell if I actually follow said plan, because I am usually terrible at this kind of follow through.

Too busy to post

This isn't even one of those times when I thought "Ugh, I'm tired, maybe I'll just post another day." I have not had more than thirty minutes to myself at a stretch since... um... *thinks* I think last week, maybe? Possibly? I don't quite remember. In order to get a proper LJ entry done, I generally need a minimum of thirty minutes, and those entries are usually not particularly long or in-depth.

So much time, so little to do...

Wait. Scratch that. Reverse it.

I am sorely tempted to drive back to Montreal tomorrow for the sole purpose of doing yard work for a few hours before coming back here for tomorrow's overtime shift. I don't think I'll succumb to the temptation, because it would be downright insane. It's just that the yard is really bugging me, and I only have a day and a half in Montreal this week before going back to work. The only full day in town I have is Wednesday, but half of that at least is going to be taken up with car repairs, and I have someone coming on Wednesday afternoon, which means that not only will the yard not get done, but it won't get done before the guy comes over, too. I am more than a little chagrined at the idea.

If I'm lucky, I'll be able to leave work early on Tuesday. The last time they allowed me to take my "break" at the end of my shift so I could go home early. If that happens, then I'll rush home as quickly as I can and try to take advantage of the daylight to make sure that the yard is at least completely clear of the last of the dog poop (the aforementioned corner that's covered in gravel).

This week's to-do list, etc. )

The joys of working statutory holidays

There are some up sides to working statutory holidays. The first is that I get paid overtime for a shift I'd be doing anyway. The second is that it's invariably quiet on those days.

Unfortunately, I also have to have the same conversation fourteen thousand times.

Caller: "Hi, may I speak to so-and-so?"

Me: "I'm sorry, the section/detachment is closed today due to the statutory holiday. Is there an emergency?"

Caller: "Oh, no. Can I leave a message?"

Me: "I'm afraid this line is for emergencies only, and we are unable to take messages."

Caller: "Oh. Well, I guess I'll call back tomorrow."

Me: "Thank you, and have a nice day!"

Still tired, but better

I ended up going to bed at 19:00 yesterday, and slept all the way until 05:00 this morning (actually 05:06, meaning I overslept), and am feeling better. Not great, but at least no longer like a complete zombie.

Of course, I'm working overtime today, so I'm sure I'll be back to Square 1 in no time. :P

I'm back!

We'll see how long it lasts. I'm up for another week with overtime, although I'm on days/evenings instead of nights, which is a blessing.

I spent most of last week sleeping. The original plan was to get a whole bunch of stuff done. Instead, my body decided that it was going to put me out of my misery by rendering me unconscious for the better part of five days. When I wasn't asleep, I had just about enough energy to play Dragon Quest VIII (and levelled up a whole bunch). I still cannot get over how much I slept. Appalling.

The weekend was spent at [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave's abode in the GFHW, along with [livejournal.com profile] toughlovemuse and [livejournal.com profile] chibipunkdemon. We went for a walk in the woods, saw a really cute mouse hiding under a log, climbed through a fence and hiked along the railroad tracks. There was knitting and crocheting, and more food than we knew what to do with, and on Saturday night we built a gigantic bonfire, around which we sat and drank scotch and un-scotch, and argued about Harry Potter and various other fun topics. I got tanned and everyone else got sunburned, and we had a fantastic time.

I got back Monday morning in time to pick up Gretzky from the vet (I boarded her there over the weekend because she needs antibiotics twice daily), brought her home, and came to work.

I feel as though I could easily take another two weeks' vacation. I barely saw the week go by, and while I feel okay, I feel about the same as I did before I started the Two Week Marathon Of Night Shift Doom. Luckily, I ought to have some more time off later this summer, unless an operation we have planned soon-ish goes south in a big way, in which case I can kiss my life goodbye.

The only part in all this that's stressing me out is the fact that my apartment is a gigantic unholy mess, yet again. I had it under control for a while, and after the past month it's a disaster. I need to un-disasterify it, first and foremost because I'm likely to be moving sooner rather than later. I have a floor to refinish, and all my stuff to pack, and in the state it is now there's no way in hell I'll ever be able to do any of it.

Gah.

Well, tomorrow is another day. With any luck I will be able to shrug off the feelings of overwhelm and panic and get myself to work on cleaning up, fifteen minutes at a time. That usually works well enough for me, once I get myself in gear.

In other news, my sanity appears to be mostly returned, after the Two Week Marathon Of Night Shift Doom. Whether or not I manage to retain it for the next three weeks remains to be seen.

Looks like the weekend is going to be... interesting

So it turns out I have to work overtime tomorrow, another 12-hour night shift. That'll be my third 12-hour night shift in a row.

Problem is, I don't know when I'll be getting any sleep before Sunday night. I might get in a few hours on Sunday morning, mind you. This is what my weekend looks like:

Saturday:

07:00: Breakfast with the parental units. I have to bring the car back to them, since they kindly let me have it during the week.

09:00: The parental units want me to go with them to get some shopping accomplished. I also have some arranging to do in the apartment, since [livejournal.com profile] talyesin is coming by later.

12:00: [livejournal.com profile] talyesin comes to visit the apartment.

14:30: (or thereabouts) I depart in order to be on time for baby Tallis' naming ceremony.

15:00-16:00: Aforementioned naming ceremony.

18:30: Night shift starts at work.

Sunday:

06:30: Night shift ends

07:15: ETA at home.

13:00-17:00: Incarnate at [livejournal.com profile] forthright and [livejournal.com profile] curtana's place.

After that, the plan is to go home, collapse and die. I start work again at 06:30 on Monday morning. I think my brain may go on an extended vacation sometime soon.

*sigh* My weekend was perfectly workable until the overtime fairy visited.
