I doubt if I'll get a SKS, I didn't really enjoy shooting it all that much (enjoyed the bayonet charge, mind you). I'll probably stick with smaller-caliber rifles and shotguns, inasmuch as I'll ever consort with non-restricted firearms.
I could *really* get into the handgun thing, though...
Hmmm... handguns. Lots of potential fun there. If you like, I can try to arrange an evening at the Vankleek Hill club with my buddy Enrico, who has more Smith&Wessons than I have guns. And that's just the Smiths :). There are a lot of options out there on the handgun market, and it'd be good to try as many as you can before buying.
The SKS is a cheap ugly military arm designed for use by illiterate Communist peasants. I kinda like it, but I'm a Sovietophiliac recoil slut.
Yup, Enrico is the LMI from work. Good guy; we have virtually identical MPOs, and it turns out that he used to knit, too. Big quiet gentle Italian guy with a beard. You'd probably like him.
Selecting firearms is kind of like selecting golf clubs; there are all sorts of different niches. Depends on what you want them for, what feels right in your hands, and then there are all sorts of other considerations. I seem to have emphasized cheap, powerful, reliable, and high-capacity; good zombie guns, in other words :). Given that you're thinking of eventually homesteading, you might want to have a look at Rawles' thoughts on firearms selection...

Don't get me wrong: I love the *idea* of the SKS. I just didn't enjoy the feel of shooting it.
I would *love* a chance to get my hands on a S&W, to see what it's like. Is this your LMI from work?
Gah. Must remember to go get my photo taken for the RPAL application...

It is *awesome* that Enrico knows how to knit. :D
He isn't LJ-enabled by any chance, is he?

He's good people. He gets the zombie thing.

Does Enrico keep up with the documentaries?

He's spending most of August off in the woods fishing, the insufferably lucky bastard, so September might work better...
Bayonets over Guns
So, you signed the Compact?
Re: Bayonets over Guns
Although I'd probably draw the line at laran weaponry just on principle.
Re: Bayonets over Guns
Ha! Boy, don't I wish I had me some of that.
Of course, I wouldn't want anyone else to have some.
Dick Cheney with laran doesn't bear thinking about.
