Whee...

So originally I was grumbling to myself because I have to go to the first of two office parties tonight. The next one is tomorrow.

Now, instead, I get to grumble because, instead of going to the office party, I have to go in early anyway to cover for yet another coworker who called in sick. I'm assuming it's just for today in his case.

I know that I should be grateful to have a good job that pays well and which I enjoy. It's just that, right now, I'm having a hard time finding the gratitude. I would really, really like a small break.

All I have to do is hang in there until Monday. Then I get a whole day and a half off! Supposing they don't recruit me to come in at 14:30, because I know they're short-staffed and they haven't realized it yet. They're going to be only two people on evening shift, whereas they should be three, minimum. There is no one else apart from me who A) can come in, and B) will agree to come in. Everyone else is either already working, coming off a shift, or unwilling to do overtime. It's not even a question of my refusing for my own sanity here: there literally is no one else left.

Even if I don't pull an extra shift on Monday, by the end of the month I will have worked 240 hours. That's 80 hours of overtime, so basically an extra two weeks in the space of a month. With the extra shift, it'll mean the equivalent of 16 extra days.

Whee.

Those of you who are inclined, flist, would you mind sending a request to the universe to get us some more qualified operators in here? It's a really good place when we're not constantly overworked.

If'n y'all didn't have those funky Canadian gun laws, I might be very tempted...

Aww, they're not that bad, considering. Plus, we pay REALLY well. :)

Well, it's the RCMP! You get to have guns, right?

Shhh! Just play along with me here...

My ARs and Mini-14 would be illegal, I believe. And an RPAL to get my various pistols ... what a pain! :)

Define "REALLY well", if I may be so nosy? Ignore overtime, just base hourly rate would be fine... My current agency is US$22/hr base pay, plus overtime and a tiny shift premium... :-)

Factoring in conversion to Canadian dollars, that's pretty much what we make. We get a decent shift premium, too, and overtime.

Considering the municipal and fire dispatch here make about 2/3 of that, we consider ourselves very well paid.

Also, my gross salary was about $12K higher thanks to OT this year. ;)

Salary aside, unfortunately you have to be a Canadian citizen in order to be part of the RCMP.

What happens if you say no, though? I mean, they can't make you do it, right? Especially since part of the reason is that there are people who are refusing to do it. Or, you know, you could just not answer your phone.

At some point, no matter how much you love the job and care about doing it, you have to think of your own sanity and health.
