Where I was this weekend

So... how was your weekend? :)

Oh, the usual, went to the border, got refused entry to the US (god I hope that doesn't count against me in future), got a new work permit, got into trouble with the Canadian border guards for playing frisbee in their parking lot, went home, tidied my closet.

Heh. Due to various stupidities in our government, I had to clear Canadian customs on Sunday after having not actually left Canada, but rather after having spent 4 hours on Cornwall (Turtle) Island.

[identity profile] mousme.livejournal.com 2009-09-14 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Eesh. What happened? Did you cross over into Akwesasne or something?

[identity profile] ai731.livejournal.com 2009-09-14 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes indeed. I went to the Akwesasne International Pow Wow, which was tons of fun.

[identity profile] mousme.livejournal.com 2009-09-14 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that sounds fantastic! I'm glad you had fun. And yes, it does count as another nation, sort of, which requires going through customs. Fun. ;)

And yes, it does count as another nation, sort of, which requires going through customs.

Not exactly. The old border crossing is at the far southern end of Cornwall (Turtle) island, right before the bridge heads over the last span of water to the USA. So as a Canadian, you used to be able to visit all of Akwesasne without going anywhere near customs. Then the government passed a law saying border guards could (and would, henceforth) carry guns. The people of Akwesasne objected to armed border guards on their territory, so the customs booths were moved off the reserve to the Cornwall (mainland) end of the bridge. So now you have to clear customs on your way back from any visit to Akwesasne, which is now in a kind of "no-man's land" between the US and Canadian customs offices.

It depends on why you got refused access. Since I'm pretty sure you weren't refused because of a criminal record, but likely because you lack the proper documentation proving that you are allowed to work and reside in Canada, it shouldn't count against you in the future.

If you want to know for sure, I would suggest calling one of the numbers here and asking about it. :)

Yeah we had to be completely out of Canada and then re-enter so that we could get the work permit. The US side seemed to know exactly what to do, they probably deal with this all the time given that it's the closest border checkpoint to Montréal. It just worried me a little when the form they gave me to show the Canadians said "We have refused entry to these people...". But when it comes to the Gods of Immigration (tm) I always tend to worry unnecessarily. For example we didn't bring any bottles of water with us in case there was the same paranoia as there is on flights, which in retrospect was a dumb idea because it was bloody hot on Friday and we had to wait hours for the coach back to Montréal. We ended up eating dry salty chicken for lunch at the hotel restaurant half a mile up the road on the Québec side, which obviously didn't help with the thirst levels either.

Sweet! Glad you had a good one!

[identity profile] mousme.livejournal.com 2009-09-14 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I did indeed. Thank you. :)

[identity profile] mousme.livejournal.com 2009-09-14 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed. Next year you should totally come with us. :)

[identity profile] crowgirl13.livejournal.com 2009-09-14 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I figure that the third year will be the charm. :) I do intend to come out with everyone on the next Humping adventure.

Isn't it? It was a grand weekend.

[identity profile] sassy-fae.livejournal.com 2009-09-14 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Awesome picture!

Surprisingly, I also had a pretty rocking weekend ;)

[identity profile] mousme.livejournal.com 2009-09-14 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Why "surprisingly?" Were you expecting to have a bad time? ;)

[identity profile] sassy-fae.livejournal.com 2009-09-15 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Perhaps 'coincidentally' would be a better word? :D

I did have an awesome time, all that 'unable to move' stuff on Sunday aside ;)

[identity profile] mieszko.livejournal.com 2009-09-14 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
It was pretty normal, drove nine hours to Vermont, drank myself silly got up in the morning climbed a mountain with a bunch of nutters that I consider friends, had dinner and drank myself silly again......:) Nice to see you again.

[identity profile] mousme.livejournal.com 2009-09-14 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It was great to see you both as well. I can hardly wait to do this all again! :)

[identity profile] sassy-fae.livejournal.com 2009-09-15 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude! That sounds like my weekend as well, except I only made it partway ;)

[identity profile] merccom.livejournal.com 2009-09-15 12:46 am (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] delta-november.livejournal.com 2009-09-15 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I spent the weekend at a friend's cottage, and taught her how to solo a canoe. It was a very Canadian moment.
