Battlestar Galactica

So I finally got my hands on the second half of Season 4. So far my reaction is mostly WTF?

So Starbuck continues to be annoying, abrasive, and schizoid. Nothing new.

Tigh continues to be a mixed-up alcoholic with conflicting... everything.

The Chief has become a whole lot less likable.

Apollo is nigh insufferable now that he's in politics.

Adama has followed in his XO's footsteps and is not a nice drunk at all.

Roslyn is getting on my nerves. You'd think everything was about her.

I really want to high Baltar. A lot. With a crowbar.

Ellen Tigh is the Final Cylon? Really? Come on! I hate her even more now.

I wish they'd stop offing my favourite characters. Also, I wish they'd stop killing babies. At this rate, humanity will be gone inside of two generations, since there's no one else left on earth.

Helo is the only character I still like. That's probably a bad sign.

I used to enjoy the moral ambiguity of the characters on the show, but now they've all slid into the very dark grey areas of morality, almost to a man, and it's very off-putting. I like my characters to *want* to be good, at the very least. If they make crappy choices, I want it to be for the right reason. Right now they're all acting as if there are no right reasons anymore.

Hell, when Saul Tigh becomes the measuring stick for moral backbone, then you know we're in trouble.

I am in it until the end, because I want to know how they end it all, but I'm glad there aren't that many episodes left.

In short, it's even bleaker than before, and I was sure it couldn't actually get any bleaker. Turns out I was wrong.

This would be one of the (sadly, many) reasons I'm deeply ambivalent about SGU. It looks like they're trying Very Hard for the BSG aesthetic, including the bleak despair, and I'm really questioning whether or not I want to get invested in it.

I dunno. It's hard to get as bleak as BSG: after all, even if everyone on the ship dies (unlikely), it's not like it means the death of all of humanity. I'd say that no matter what, it'll never get *that* bleak.

I am more optimistic about SGU now that I know that John Scalzi is one of the creative consultants. :)

I actually got a chance to talk to John one-on-one about the series at the last Detroit-area con we were both at, and as a result I have NO doubt that he's had a positive impact on the final product. (I'll be happy to lay out specifics away from the prying eyes of Google ;) ) The question is, whether or not it's a product I'll still want to see, as an unapologetic fanboy of SG-1 who was more than happy with the blend of light and dark and of episodic and serial storytelling.

But, of course, I'm reserving judgment. These are the guys who made at least one terrific series, and a guy who is super-smart and written some damn fine books. it could be everything I want and so much more ;)

Though I'm still miffed about the Master Sergeant Kindergartener ;)

I love Saul and Ellen Tigh, I have to say.

But you're right that Helo is really the only likable character.

I haven't seen the final half of 4 (but I don't care about seeing spoilers hehe...)

But Ellen Tigh? Really? Weaksauce.

I'm still going to watch them when I get my hands on them, but Ellen Tigh? Gah!

It's worse than it sounds. :P

Are you going to be at Hurley's tonight?

W00T!

I finally have my eeePC all duded up and charged and with me, so I will try this nifty thing called writing I heard about if I get there early.
