A request for a quick lesson in accounting

Dear flist,

This is Phnee admitting (another) major shortcoming. I would like to learn to use an accounting ledger properly, so that I can set up a proper paper-based accounting system for my home. I want to stay on top of my finances better than I currently am.

I am happy to barter for an hour of someone's time (I don't think it'll take much more than that: I'm a quick study, and I don't need to know much more than the basics), by cooking you dinner or something. Or else if you happen to be a professional I will pay your going rate.

Any takers?

May I suggest an alternative? Something like Quickbooks guides you thru the whole process without you actually having to learn how to set up an accounting system - you just enter the numbers into their system, and it's not expensive.

Computers have an alarming tendency to develop crippling problems on me every so often, making me paranoid about keeping that sort of stuff only in digital form. Also, half of that kind of software hates my Mac. :P

It's a good thought, but I don't want to rely solely on it. Besides, when TEOTWAKI happens, I'll have to know how to do it without electronic aids. ;)

Hee! OK. Although when TEOTWAKI happens, I doubt I'm going to be spending much time balancing my checkbook...

I figure that if I survive, eventually I'll have to figure out how to manage a significantly-reduced budget. ;)

When TEOTWAKI, you'll be trading cans of beans, not bits of printed paper! But you might need a bean counter then.

Isn't it TEOTWAWKI?

Are you sure you want accounting? Don't you just want to know how much you earn, how much you spend, how much you save, and when bills are due? As well as, maybe some budgeting?

I could show you how to do that in a spreadsheet and it would be much easier than on paper, while still giving you the idea of how to do it on paper.

Okay, nomenclature fail. Yes, that's what I meant. :)

So... when does your crunch season end? Is it over yet, or are you still dealing with clients who are late with their tax returns? :)

Let me know, and we can try to set something up.

Hurray for fiscal responsibility!

Oh! How could I be such a thoughtless dunce!

Go make friends with [livejournal.com profile] baba_studio, who has designed stunning tarot decks, though at present, she's more wrapped up in making beautiful tarot bags out of antique and modern fabrics she finds in Prague, where she lives.

But her LJ is not exactly for business, so I wouldn't ask her about readings or anything. Ummm, let's see - go google. Baba is Karen Mahony and a partner. Here are some of her images.

And while poking around, U.S. Games has 117 decks. Permit me to warn you off the Aquarian, which depicts Strength as a man, contrary to tradition. Maybe it won't bother you, but it peeves me something fierce. U.S. Games has decks in French, if that is better for you.

Hmm, there's a Tarot for Dummies which includes the basic Rider-Waite deck, but I haven't read it.

by Her Holy Hooves and Horn, here's The Gummy Bear Tarot.

I'm doing a steampunk project and using the Victoria Regina deck as a prop, shame on me, but there it is.

My dear sweet [livejournal.com profile] cleverpunition sent me the Housewives Tarot for my birthday! Very campy and funny, but still works.

Sources: eBay, Amazon, U.S. Games, and a host of online occult shops. It is still hard for me to look at these sites and not place large orders... they're so beautiful, and always, there are new themes and artists, drooooool.

Oh, what sort of Steampunk project?

I may well purchase a bag from your friend, if one strikes my fancy. Right now I'm looking for a "basic" deck to start out with. I may branch out later.

If you're researching decks, go to http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/

They have the most comprehensive collection of deck reviews on the web. And they have very useful categories to browse through (eg. decks by theme http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/themes.shtml) so that you can narrow down what sort of thing you're looking for.
