Now, does that meant you're not allowed to own anything interesting, or just that people shouldn't be surprised to find out that, say, you have a secret stash of Transformers that you like to play with when no one is looking?

I dunno if I can quite get onboard with either of those interpretations!

I interpreted it more as a "Good Lord, how on earth did a dirty sock get in HERE?" kind of thing. Not as an indictment of people who own interesting/eccentric stuff.

Reminds me of a pair of my very dear friends who one day had a conversation along the lines of:

"Shall we get married?"

"OK, but I want a geiger counter."

And so, he arranged to give her a geiger counter as a wedding gift. Everyone except me (who had known the couple for ages) and a few others who were similarly aware of their ecceentricities were very, very confused at the wedding.
