No, it doesn't have to be self-contained. In fact, a one-line announcement saying "I wrote today. Complete piece forthcoming in a few days," is fine, and was in fact used by more than one of us last year. :)

You can absolutely write in a notebook and transcribe several days later as well. We did a lot of that last year (I was away from the computer for the better part of a week in August).
