We have a lot of different charity organisations here, and while they are great, they are based on the charity model, not the mutual aid model, and so they aren't exactly what I'm looking for, especially since most (but not all) are religious in nature. Yes, I am a Christian, but I am also deeply suspicious of people using charity work to proselytize to the vulnerable. There's always an implied "threat" of withholding services unless the recipients agree to be subjected to Christian messaging, and I dislike that intensely.

I'm sorry that lady said such worrying things. Isolationist, protectionist and xenophobic sentiment is on the rise everywhere, it seems. Personally I really enjoy having neighbours of all ethnicities and backgrounds--it makes for a richer neighbourhood!
