One thing I recently discovered for my cats is that city vets are exponentially more expensive than country vets (tooth cleaning in the city: 500$ + taxes. Tooth cleaning in the country: 100$, including taxes.) The same applies for medication and pet foods bought through the vet. It's worth it for me to drive the pets an hour and a half out of the city to see a really amazing country vet whenever there's anything semi-serious. If he does wind up with something, it might be worth balancing spare time vs spare money and seeing which you could spare most of?
