Wait, why do you think "everyone else in the universe" manages to get things done (especially things that require sustained concentration, like betaing a story) with a small child around? I certainly couldn't, or at least not reliably. Naptimes and after bed were the main times I could write until Arthur was around 5 or so, and even then it wasn't always possible to do things that needed my full attention while he was awake. Don't think that you're incompetent for finding it hard to work with a toddler underfoot. (But it does get easier as they get to school age.)
