How quickly we forget...

So early on Saturday morning I turned to Hottie!Coworker who was working night shift with me and said "Hey, it's officially D-Day. It's been 65 years, after all.

Her reaction?

"What's D-Day?"

I just about fell over. Even when I explained about the Normandy Landings she shrugged it off with a laugh and said she doesn't know anything about that sort of thing. She's 33 years old, so it's not an age thing.

I'm... honestly shocked. Yes, it's history, but it's still in living memory. How is it that so many of my generation are so ignorant?

Tell her she should work remembrance day at regular salary since she doesn't know anything about that sort of thing....I hate ignorance about crucial events in history ie reason why we are still here and not speaking german

I have no idea. The thought that someone would not know what D-Day is kinda breaks my brain. :(

That is the reason Ken Burns made The War documentary. 14 hours about World War 2.

sadly this happens all the time. I don't know if it is a break down in the education systems or if it is just plain ignorance is bliss. Sad that people don't seem to care about why the world runs as it does...

Ergh. She must've skipped school that lifetime. Really too bad. I have too many veterans in my family to get away with that sort of thing. If I were to say something like that, I think I'd wind up behind the tool shed.

If that isn't proof that you're way overqualified for this job, I don't know what is... :D

There was something in the Gazette today about how the Normandy landings aren't mentioned in the current English School board history books, which instead concern themselves instead with the fact that Quebequois fought against being recruited. So I guess the same must be the case for the French language texts. In which case, one can hardly blame her for not knowing about it. If you don't know about such a thing, you wouldn't watch the Ken Burns series, either, probably. One needs a basic knowledge of something to want to pursue it, I think.
