There's a meme going around saying "describe yourself using three fictional characters." These are the ones I came up with.

In order: Clarissa Vaughan from The Hours (honestly, I'd probably marry her if she were real, but I identified really strongly with her as well), Lady Kluck (aka "Clucky") from Walt Disney's Robin Hood, and Woody from Toy Story.

I think it fits pretty well. :)

It's June! That means I'm going to write every day based on a topic of your choice. Not all the dates have been picked up yet, so don't let [livejournal.com profile] sorceror have all the fun! ;)

Today [livejournal.com profile] sorceror asked me to talk about classic film, since it's Marilyn Monroe's birthday. Before I get into it, I have to point out that I am in no way, shape or form an expert on film in any way. In fact, I don't even qualify as an amateur enthusiast. I just like watching movies, and some of those include classic film.

This entry will likely end up a bit disjointed. Apologies in advance.

There are over 20 slots left to fill up for my tell me what to write about in June meme. Feel free to pick one or more dates and give me topics! :)

I realised I haven't talked about all those things I started over the last few months and promised I would keep you posted on (even if you're not interested! Muahaha! Ahem.). So, in no particular order:

Caffeine )

The Mystery Tired )

Nutrition and Exercise )

The Great No-Shampoo Experiment )

And that's it for now. Stay tuned for more thrilling instalments.

I've been a little remiss about posting daily, so I've decided to follow the example of a few of my LJ friends and do a sort of meme. For each day of next month, I will let one of you fine folk pick the topic of a post for each day. So in the comments you pick a date and tell me what you'd like me to write about on that day. I will update the list as required.

If days are left blank, well, I shall just have to make something up. Since I don't have crazy numbers of people on my flist, feel free to pick more than one date. :)

Questions from [livejournal.com profile] bodhifox:

Why do you want to be a mountie?

Egads. That's complex(ish).

It has something to do with who I think I am, fundamentally. I have always had a really strong sense of justice, and until I started working in law enforcement (however indirectly), I never felt that I was making a proper difference in people's lives. In my previous jobs, I couldn't help but feel dissatisfied that no matter how hard I worked, I was doing nothing to make the world a better place.

The RCMP is allowing me to do just that. Still, sometime around last year, after a few conversations with colleagues and the like, I decided that I could be doing more than simply being a phone person. It's part of my little process of getting to know myself better, of trying to push my boundaries, seeing just how far I can go.

It's also a small matter of civic pride. I love my country, and the RCMP is one of the emblems of Canada. My father once pointed out to me that Canada is one of the few countries which is *known* for its police force. When people think of Canada, they think of maple leaves, hockey, and the RCMP. Somehow, the idea of serving that ideal appeals to me a great deal.

When you think, is your default French or English?

I don't have a default, really. I think in whatever language happens to suit the subject matter I'm thinking about. It varies from topic to topic.

If you were to date a celebrity, who would she be?

Hard to say. I only know celebrities from what I see on the screen, and of course that's not their real personality, is it?

Based on looks alone, Sandra Bullock is definitely on my short list. :)

Mountains and streams, orchards and fields, or buildings and streets? Which of those three best describe you as a person?

Do I absolutely have to pick one of those? I'm more of a forest and clearings kind of girl. If I have to pick from what you gave me, then "orchards and fields" comes closest.

What one thing *must* I see when I go to France?

Uh.

One thing?

Gah.

If you're in Paris, then the Louvre. You can't go wrong there, there will ALWAYS be something that will be of interest to someone.

I have a soft spot for the Chartres Cathedral, too. It has arguably the most beautiful stained glass in all the world. It brought tears to my eyes when I first saw the blue there. YMMV, of course.

Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Then post them in your LJ and explain what they mean to you.

Words from [livejournal.com profile] bodhifox:

resourceful

Huh. I would like to be a resourceful person. Resourcefulness is a quality I admire very much in other people.

strong

Weirdly enough, I've been working on my physical strength lately. I've been altogether too focused on the mental aspect of my life, and so now I'm trying to match up my physical aspect. I was inspired lately by [livejournal.com profile] urban_homestead, who mentioned in a recent entry that she has always prided herself on her strength (among many other qualities), rather than on being small and slim, and I think that this is an attitude I ought to embrace as well. So.

loyal

I am built a little bit like a golden retriever, personality-wise. I am very loyal to my friends (although I suck at keeping in touch). Loyalty is a quality I prize in others, and to a certain extent I require it of my friends and loved ones in no small measure.

dedicated

I'm going to sound like a broken record, but this is yet another quality that I think is important in life: dedication to one's ideals, to one's friends, one's work. Dedication is what sees us through to our goals.

creative

I like to think of myself as a creative person. I write, I knit, I put on plays for my friends once a year. I taught myself to play the drums, and occasionally I come up with off-the-wall ideas. I enjoy being a creative person, although sometimes I have to channel it into not-especially-creative tasks. It makes it more fun, at the very least.
mousme: A view of a woman's legs from behind, wearing knee-high rainbow socks. The rest of the picture is black and white. (Goat)
From [livejournal.com profile] bodhifox:

The problem with Livejournal is that we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. Hence, I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don’t know about you.

So… ask. Something you think you should know, but don’t.

A meme!

mousme: A view of a woman's legs from behind, wearing knee-high rainbow socks. The rest of the picture is black and white. (Goat)
The five topics meme. Rules: if you ask for them, I give you five topics and then you expand upon them. You need to use the words "pick me" or some other variation thereof in a comment for me to give you topics. Otherwise, I'll assume that you're commenting but not wanting to play. Questions from [livejournal.com profile] bodhifox:

TEOTWAKI:

"It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine!"

[livejournal.com profile] fearsclave introduced me to this acronym that's commonly used by survivalist types in various internet communities. I don't use it much, but I like it because it can refer to so many different kinds of the end of the world: everything from slow economic collapse to the zombie apocalypse. So I get to use it in a tongue-in-cheek fashion whenever I'm discussing survivalist stuff with my friends.

Off The Grid:

This is one of my long-term goals. Eventually I'd like to get a house in the country and set it up so that I'm entirely self-sufficient. That means going off the grid: disconnecting from publicly (or even privately) distributed electricity and plumbing. The telephone and internet are likely to be trickier, but the idea is not to depend on outside sources of power.

Like-minded Individuals:

It's pretty much what it sounds like. Again, [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave introduced me to this concept, likewise used by survivalist types. It basically means people with a similar mindset: those who are concerned about TEOTWAKI, about being more self-sufficient, who think peak oil is a reality and that we are going to see drastic changes to how we live in our lifetime, and sooner rather than later.

Mythmaking:

Myths and mythology have long been one of my ruling passions. I've neglected it of late, but when I was younger I used to read books on mythology all the time. I am always interested in seeing how myths are built and made, both on a societal scale and an individual one. People make up their own stories, their own personal mythologies. Part of the reason I love fantasy and science fiction so much is because the authors put so much work into building their worlds, and world-building necessarily means mythmaking.

Loyalty:

This one's tough to explain. Loyalty is one of the virtues I admire most, and one that's practically hard-wired into my system. Once someone is part of my fremily, it takes a lot for me to go back on that. I am occasionally loyal to the point of stupidity. I've become a little better about that, and no longer let people walk all over me or use me as an emotional punching-bag, but I'll still put up with a lot from friends before I'll start to pull away.

Basically, if I'm your friend, I stay that way forever. We can part ways for a while, but if you reappear on my doorstep after 20 years and need a place to crash, my sofa is yours.

Saturdays appear to be meme days. Memes are nice in that I don't have to spend forever thinking about what to write. ;)

From [livejournal.com profile] ladyiolanthe

Comment to this post, and I list five things I associate with you. They might make sense or they might be totally random — then post that list, with your commentary, to your lj (or just add a reply back at me). I and other people get our lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

(These five things from [livejournal.com profile] ladyiolanthe)

Cops: Well, I work for the RCMP as a dispatcher, so that's not a heck of a surprise. I work with cops all day long, and one of the best-known police forces in the world, for that matter. I'm pretty proud of where I work, in spite of the fact that parts of it are b0rked and there's too much administration and the left hand never talks to the right hand. It's neat for me to think that my country is known for it's police force, because of how good they are, and not because of corruption or violence or something.

Bald: I'm not bald anymore, but I was for a while back in October, when I shaved my head in order to raise money for breast cancer research. Thanks to my friends and co-workers, we raised nearly $3,000! So thank you! :)

Tufitri: Tufitri was an NPC I played in [livejournal.com profile] forthright's epic IRC roleplaying game, Perseity. She was the spitting image of another PC's dead wife, and she was neurotic, insecure, and also happened to be pretty gorgeous. I had a lot of fun playing her, and was kind of sad that I always had to keep her in check because she was an NPC and not supposed to hog the spotlight. ;)

Avril Lavigne: This is another leftover from Perseity. I kind of loosely based my own PC, Margot, on Avril Lavigne, and always had Avril playing in the backrgound whenever I was playing Margot, particularly "Don't Tell Me," and "Happy Ending." I never much liked Avril Lavigne before then, but she grew on me, and now I have happy roleplaying associations with her.

Guns: This one's a bit more random, since I don't talk about guns much. I like to think of myself as a rational gun control advocate. I used to be rabidly anti-gun, a position taken early on by my parents, but after spending some time with reasonable people who use guns in a way that is perfectly safe and law-abiding, I have come to a more moderate way of thinking. I think the CFRO (the Canadian gun registry) is a huge, clunky, money-wasting piece of crap. It's not useful for preventing gun-related violence except in a small portion of cases, and most of the cops with whom I work feel the same. I would LOVE it if there were a way to regulate firearms, but the way to regulate them is to regulate the *tool* and not the people. Getting an illegal firearm is pretty easy if you're a criminal who knows where to look.

(These five things from [livejournal.com profile] elanya)

Zombies: I have a thing for zombies. They are one of my favourite type of enemies in fiction, for the same reason that I love the Borg (before Voyager ruined them forever): they are quasi-human, and they are inexorable. Individually, a zombie isn't much of a threat. The threat comes from the fact that there are thousands, tens of thousands of them, and they never stop coming. You can run, you can elude them for a while. Days, weeks, maybe even months or years. But you are human, they are not, and eventually you will slip up and they will get you. I wrote a zombie novel back in 2006, most of which is online.

Knitting: I am, in spite of doing this for years, still a novice knitter. I get enthused about a project and get all knitty for a while, and then I leave it alone for months. I like knitting: I can usually see progress in a very short span of time, which is all to the good for me. :)

RCMP: This has been discussed previously. :)

Quakers: Although I'm not officially a Quaker, and don't go to Meeting nearly as often as I should, this is the religion with which I've come to identify the most. Their ideals of simple living, of living each day as though it's sacred, of dealing honestly with everyone and everything, is exactly the way I strive to live my own life. If my schedule were more flexible and involved less overtime, I'd be at Meeting a lot more often.

Two Lumps: Two Lumps is one of my favourite webcomics ever. It's from the point of view of two cats who live with their "mom," and the wacky antics they get up to. It's not as funny as it used to be, but I still enjoy it. At one point, ALL my LJ icons were taken from that webcomic (it was a theme).

(These five things from [livejournal.com profile] luvenditti)

Friend: Lu and I have been friends for several years, though it sometimes feels like a lifetime. Often enough it seems weird to me that I haven't known her forever, and that there are significant chunks of each other's lives that we've not experienced first-hand.

Drummer: I am the Drummer, I hit on everything. ;) Back in 2005, inspired by t! and Invisible, [livejournal.com profile] karine, [livejournal.com profile] ai731, [livejournal.com profile] toughlovemuse, [livejournal.com profile] owldaughter and I formed an all-girl band of somewhat eclectic instruments (vocals, rhythm guitar, saxophone, cello, and drums, respectively). I have ALWAYS wanted to be Bugs Potter, having always identified much more strongly with the "flute guys" of this world. This was my big chance and I took it, teaching myself the basics of playing the drums. Thus I confirmed that I do, indeed, rock like a rocking thing. Invisible even wrote a song about it!

Wit: "True wit is nature to advantage dressed, what oft was thought but ne'er so well expressed." This is one of my favourite quotes, and is from Alexander Pope. I come from a family of intellectuals, where wit and having a quick mind and a glib tongue are highly prized. The same went for my school years: if you were sharp, people mostly left you alone. Thus I have a pretty finely-honed sense of irony, and if I'm not too upset (when I become completely incoherent) then I'm pretty good with comebacks and general snark.

Flapper: I assume this doesn't have anything to do with 1920's stylistic choices, and has everything to do with the fact that I have the slightly embarrassing tendency to flap my hands when I get excited. :D

Cool beans: Not sure where this comes from. I think maybe [livejournal.com profile] luvenditti thinks I am cool beans, which is pretty awesome. :D

Say you were meeting a new person, blind date, new friend, who knows, and you wanted them to have some idea of what kind of person you are, and who you are. But you can't actually tell them in so many words.

Instead, you have to give them a box, with a dozen things in it for them to look at/read/listen to/taste/whatever. What would you put in the box?"

You get a baker's dozen with me, as well. :)
